"In this Project we explored themes of transformation, impermanence, and resilience by examining some creative arts examples including ephemeral art by Andy Goldsworthy, imagery from the Rider-Waite-Smith tarot deck, and the lyrics of the song "Anthem" by Leonard Cohen. Each of these examples inspired discussion about life transitions, fear and acceptance of change, death and rebirth, and the importance of celebrating our resilience in the face of great injustice. Writing for transformation allows us to externalize and process deep emotions and traumas that have yet to be released from the body and molded into something new.
One of the prompting questions we included in this project asked participants to consider their role in change - "If you could plant one seed right now - for a habit, a relationship, a dream - what would it be, and why?" I appreciate that this question relates the human experience to the seed - I envision my evolution to adulthood as the full grown tree that cycles through death and rebirth, season after season, withstanding storm after storm, still bringing new life each spring. I also appreciate that this question encourages us to be gardeners who are guided by their faith in tomorrow- that one day, the tiny seed planted in the darkness will one day push through the soil and into the light.
I am grateful to witness how Anna had the audacity to plant this seed of an idea and remain devoted to its growth throughout the last year, so that we are now able to share in witnessing the tree that grew in its place. The faith she had in that creative seed now has the potential to impact and inspire our neighbors, just like it has for me. So, I urge you to consider, What seeds in your life still need to be planted? How are you nourishing the seeds that you already planted? And how are the fully grown trees in your life impacting those that seek comfort under its shade?"
